The only major hangup with this particular model is its Intel Core m3-6Y30 processor. It’s a sixth-gen chip, but a Core m, while improved, is still generally less powerful than a Core i3 in practice. It is capable of getting things done, but gaming is a reach, and you don’t want to push too hard with media editing. For everyday browsing and less professional desktop apps, though, it’s competent. Not bad at all, just closer to what you’d expect for the money.If you want this design with a more powerful chip, you can pay up for a Core i5-packing Zenbook UX305LA, but at that point you’re a ways away from the budget range. If you need something a little bit stronger, there’s the $550 Acer Aspire E5-573G, but then you’re doubling the thickness and weight. Ultimately, we think the UX305CA is the best compromise for most people in this market, especially at this price.The Microsoft HoloLens holographic goggles may not be comfortable to wear for long periods of time, warns game developer David Dedeine in an interview with PC World.

Just like how your laptop may get too hot for your bare skin if you use it long enough, the HoloLens has a processor that can heat up during use, warns Dedeine.HoloLens is what you call "augmented reality" — a headset that overlays three-dimensional images over the real world.And unlike virtual reality headsets like the just-released Oculus Rift, the HoloLens is a self-contained device that doesn’t need to be connected to a PC to work.Which means that the 1.25-pound-ish HoloLens is pressed right up against your noggin, processor and all.For developers like Dedeine, who’s building introductory HoloLens games "Young Conker" and "Figments," it’s another consideration when building for HoloLens. Not only do you have to manage an app’s battery consumption, but also the strain it puts on the processor.“Even more important, its heat — to not make the whole thing get too hot, as it would be uncomfortable to the user," Dedeine tells PC World.

Indeed, he says, if the HoloLens gets too hot, it’ll automatically shut down the offending app to protect the user.Granted, the HoloLens is still in version 1, with only a very limited $3,000 edition going out to developers this week. But comfort is something that Microsoft and its developers are going to have to take into account while building out the future of augmented reality.That said, Dedeine says it’s not the kind of device that people might wear for hours on end, rather using it for a few minutes or hours at a time, meaning that the discomfort won’t have time to get too bad. That’s also why he’s not concerned about the HoloLens’ three-hour battery life.Also of note, Dedeine downplayed the disappointing restrictions of the HoloLens’ primary viewing area, which can only project holograms in a small rectangle in front of you. They had a rocky start, but five years after the first Chromebook shipped, they’ve picked up steam. In part, that’s because computer hardware has gotten more powerful and less expensive. The focus has been put on power efficiency instead of raw power, which is great for all computer manufactures, but especially benefits Chromebooks. The other part of the equation is software. Another benefit of ChromeOS is, because there’s no large underlying file system, you can’t accidentally delete a crucial file and totally mess up your computer. That also means there are no viruses, there’s nothing there to infect.There is a major caveat to owning a Chromebook, though. Buying one means keeping your life in the cloud. Chromebooks work by giving you very little storage space, instead asking you to rely on the cloud to store all of your data. This is great if you stream your music from Spotify, watch movies on Hulu or Netflix, store your photos on Facebook and are ready to give up Microsoft Office for Google Drive. If you’re not, this is a no-go, but if you are, things get interesting. Having everything in the cloud means that nothing you have should ever be truly lost or inaccessible. If you’re working in Google Docs, and you spill a latte on your keyboard, you might short the computer, but the data will be safely synced. That also makes Chromebooks highly compatible with multi-computer lifestyles, anything you need from your home computer can be accessed at work or someone else’s house.
If you’re ready to make the transition to a cloud-based life, this Chromebook from Acer is a good choice. Most of its specs are modest, but it has a 1080p screen, webcam, full aluminum body, HDMI port, and 12 hours worth of battery life. Not only that, but next month, it’s going to become one of the first Chromebooks to run Android apps instead of just cloud-based Chrome apps. This opens up its capabilities significantly, because Android’s app store is chock-full of popular apps that don’t have web-based versions.

In some ways, Chromebooks are still "the computer of the future," and if you’re still a bit dodgy on going all-in on the cloud, there are plenty of other options out there. There’s no one category of tech where the old “You get what you pay for” axiom rings truer — you simply aren’t going to find many affordable notebooks that are close to being "objectively good" buys the way a Macbook Pro or Dell XPS 13 is. On average, their screens are grainy, their builds are flimsy, and their internals aren’t very fast. Mediocrity is the norm.

But they’re cheap. It’s perfectly understandable why legions of plastic $400 notebooks are swiped off of Best Buy and Walmart’s shelves each fall: Even if it’s the safer purchase in the long run, dropping $1,000 on a better-made machine is a schedule-changing investment. And it’s not as if every laptop buyer needs higher-end materials in their stuff.That said, if you’re going to buy cheap, you might as well get the most from your dollar. So instead of writing off the category and demanding you save your money for a better notebook, we dove headfirst into the sea of budget laptops to find the ones that are worth buying.Not surprisingly, the returns were thin. We settled on a rough guideline of laptops under $550, but since this side of the market is filled with such a diverse range of devices, we included our favorites from a selection of full-on notebooks, 2-in-1 convertibles, Chromebooks, and ultra-affordable Windows machines, like the HP Stream.

As a NAS, the TripMate isn’t quite as robust. The TripMate app you need to use to access your stuff is still a bit clunky, and the device itself doesn’t have any included storage. If you’re willing to fiddle around with it, though, it’s at least possible to hook a hard drive or microSD card up to the device, then stream video or music files you have on it through the cloud. It’s consistent enough to be useful on a long flight or train ride.You can find individual batteries, wall chargers, NAS devices, and routers that perform better, but then you have to keep track of four separate things. Given how much this thing does for its size (and price) — and given the 4.4 rating it has on Amazon after 2,600 user reviews — the TripMate is a great companion for any tech-savvy traveler. Say what you will about Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, but there’s no question that he’s thinking much bigger than cars and rockets.He showed that again this week when he renewed his call for a carbon tax during a speech in Paris to coincide with the UN Climate Summit.

If you’re a cynic, you might say Musk has been trying to create a new story for Wall Street, to counter some of the skepticism that’s emerged over Tesla’s financial prospects. After all, when he became hyper-rich after eBay bought PayPal, he didn’t spend his millions to develop a social-media app. Rather, he bought into an electric-car company, declared that he wanted to send astronauts to Mars, and invested in solar power.And he hasn’t been content to let Tesla simply build cars. Earlier this year, he revealed two new Tesla products: a "home" battery and a much bigger "utility scale" battery. A spinoff enterprise was created: Tesla Energy. Effectively, Tesla is offering customers the opportunity to buy, or lease, a Tesla battery without shelling out $100,000 for a Tesla vehicle.With the carbon-tax proposal, his objective here is to accelerate the transition from a fossil-fuels energy economy to one powered by sustainable energy. The transition, in his view, is being slowed by the lack of taxes on carbon; effectively, this represents a subsidy on carbon and incentivizes the status quo, which is not helping to address global warming.You can’t look at Musk’s companies as, well, companies. Tesla, SpaceX, and SolarCity (which is run by Musk’s cousins) taken together are really a system, and Musk is a systems engineer, or designer, or architect (take your pick).

To prevent global warming, you need to completely change the transportation matrix, replacing the internal-combustion engine en masse. That’s Tesla role.To power Tesla’s cars, you need electricity that isn’t generated by fossil fuels. That’s where SolarCity comes in. Musk wants to capture the free energy of the sun.And just in case it all goes to hell, the planet become uninhabitable, or an asteroid bears down on Earth, SpaceX is there to — as Musk puts it — make us "multiplanetary." We could use Mars as a lifeboat.Musk’s whole system runs on power gathered from the sun, and if you want to do that at any kind of scale, you need to store the energy. That’s where the batteries and Tesla Energy come in. Tesla wouldn’t be Tesla without its innovative, idiosyncratic battery design — thousands of laptop-style lithium-ion cells wired together. This design enabled Tesla to be the only electric-car maker selling a vehicle that delivered range on par with the gas-powered competition.Over the years since Tesla’s founding and Musk’s arrival, the company has steadily improved its power-management capabilities. With that has come reduced cost. Until now, those savings went mainly to Tesla owners, who were paying $100,000 for a battery plus a car.

But now Tesla wants to put the battery at the center of a save-the-Earth system — making it affordable to acquire one and encouraging at least the beginnings of a major revolution in how customers store and use energy.The point is that Musk has been thinking this way all along. It wasn’t as if he woke up a year ago and said, "Let’s do a better job of commercializing our batteries!" The batteries have been a driving force in the Tesla story for its entire history.In case you have any doubt about that, just look at the $5 billion battery factory — the Gigafactory — that Tesla and Panasonic are building in Nevada. Musk wants to be delivering 500,000 cars by 2020. But he’s going to need millions of li-ion battery cells to power them.This is how big thinking works. So while creating batteries for the home and demanding a carbon tax might not be quite as sexy as pulling the cover off a hot new car, in the long run it could matter far more to life on Earth. At least if Musk is thinking big enough.

The Californian tech giant, via its charitable arm Google.org, is donating 25,000 laptops to German charities and aid groups trying to tackle the ongoing refugee crisis, it announced on Monday.The devices are ChromeBooks, a type of laptop that runs Google’s Chrome OS as its operating system. Organisations can apply for up to 5,000 of the laptops, with suggested uses including facilitating language courses, educational tools for children, and building internet cafés."Project Reconnect" is being run in conjunction with NetHope, an organisation that helps connect non-profit organisations to tech companies.The current refugee crisis is considered the Europe’s biggest refugee crisis since the Second World War. Over one million refugees have arrived on the continent, creating a logistical nightmare and a rapidly-escalating humanitarian crisis in parts of Europe. Angela Merkel’s Germany has been particularly proactive in taking in refugees. Back in October 2015, Google launched a "Crisis Info Hub." It’s a smartphone web app that provides vital information in a "lightweight, battery-saving way."

This includes information on ports, transport links, medical info, and places to sleep, and is available in English, Arabic, and other languages. It’s built in collaboration with the International Rescue Committee and Mercy Corps, two aid organisations, and is open source. The crisis currently facing Europe differs from previous major migration events in one key one area: Smartphones.Huge numbers of migrants and refugees coming to the continent equipped with smartphones, and use them to find information, communicate, and navigate their way to their destination.It has transformed relief efforts, with aid workers offered a new way to contact people who need their new help. It also presents new challenges — getting sufficient electricity to the refugees, as well as WiFi and stable internet connections.Kate Coyer is the director of the Civil Society and Technology Project at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. She’s also become a volunteer relief worker since the crisis escalated, when she and a number of tech-activist friends got together to see what they could do to help. (She’s also spoken about her volunteer work with New Scientist.)

Their solution? Battery-powered WiFi hotspots that can be worn in a backpack, along with charging banks cobbled together out of parts bought from high-street stores to let users charge up their devices. (Alongside the volunteer efforts of Coyer and others, established charities like Greenpeace are also working on the ground with more professional, long-term solutions.) And it lets them quickly respond to changing needs — she cites an incident when people were walking down a highway at night towards the border. Aid workers quickly realised they weren’t particularly safe, so were able to put out a call and have someone drop off fluorescent jackets from a nearby IKEA.

Aid workers have built localised tools like Google’s Crisis Info Hub before to help refugees. Srba Jovanovic, a relief worker in Belgrade, told Business Insider there is a special web-based app for the Miksaliste aid station that provides refugees with accurate information about essential services. When they log on to the free WiFi networks provided by aid workers, they are initially redirected to the page, which lists the correct costs of taxis, toilet locations, places to buy food, and other useful information.The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you’ll like. April 2016 geladen und die Branche ist sich sicher, dass an dem Tag das neue Flaggschiff-Smartphone P9 präsentiert werden wird. In dem Einladungsschreiben an Pressevertreter verzichten die Chinesen zwar auf klare Hinweise, doch wird der Slogan "change the way you see the world" aufgeführt, was als Anspielung auf die Kameratechnik des P9 verstanden werden kann.Nach ersten wilden Spekulation über einen Vorstellungstermin des nächsten Huawei-Flaggschiff-Smartphones hat der chinesische Hersteller selbst nun glücklicher Weise Einladungsschreiben für ein Event versandt. Den bislang durchgesickerten Informationen nach wird das der Nachfolger des Huawei P8 mit einem Dual-Kamerasystem auf der Rückseite aufwarten, bei dem jede der Kameras einen 12 Megapixel Sensor und eine Linse von Leica bietet. Unklar ist derzeit allerdings noch, welche neuen Möglichkeiten dieses Dual-Kamerasystem bei dem kommenden Topmodell eröffnen wird. Andere Smartphones unterschiedlicher Hersteller, die in der Vergangenheit mit einem ähnlichen Kamerasystem aufwarteten, boten beispielsweise die Funktion, den Fokus-Bereich und -Level einer Aufnahme nachträglich zu verändern, oder besonders hochauflösende Bilder zu schießen.

Jenseits der Kamera-Technik geht die Gerüchteküche davon aus, dass das Huawei P9 ein 5,2 Zoll großes Full-HD-Display und einen riesigen 3900-mAh-Akku mitbringen wird. Das Gerät sieht auf den ersten Blick genau aus wie das letztjährige HTC-Flaggschiff One M9 und teilt mit diesem auch diverse Ausstattungsmerkmale, istjedoch in der mittlerweile hart umkämpften Premium-Mittelklasse einzuordnen.

Sehr wahrscheinlich nur wenige Wochen vor der Ankündigung eines brandneuen Flaggschiff-Smartphones hat der taiwanische Hersteller HTC heute eine Neuauflage des letztjährigen Topmodells präsentiert. Das One M9 Prime Camera Edition sieht dem klassischen One M9 zum Verwechseln ähnlich, ist aber weniger leistungsfähig und bietet eine andere Hauptkamera auf der Rückseite.Maße und Design und einige grundlegende Ausstattungsmerkmale des neuen One M9 Prime Camera Edition hat HTC direkt vom bekannten Schwestermodell übernommen. Das neue Smartphone bringt demnach wieder ein Metall-Unibody-Chassis, ein 5 Zoll großes Full-HD-Display (1920 x 1080 Pixel), BoomSound-Stereolautsprecher an der Gehäusefront, Unterstützung für WLAN nach 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.1 und LTE Cat. 4, einen 2840-mAh-Akku sowie einen microSD-Kartenslot mit. Wenig überraschend für ein Smartphone, das den Beinamen „Prime Camera Edition“ trägt, hat HTC bei der Entwicklung der M9-Neuauflage besonderen Wert auf die Hauptkamera gelegt. Auf der Rückseite des Geräts sitzt somit nicht länger der bekannte 20 Megapixel Sensor, sondern neue Technik in Form eines aktuelleren 13 Megapixel Sensors mit f/2.0-Blende und optischem Bildstabilisator sowie Dual-LED-Blitz. Ob beziehungsweise wie signifikant sich diese Änderung auf die Aufnahmequalität auswirkt, müssen allerdings erst noch unabhängige Tests zeigen.Unstrittig auch ohne eingehende Prüfung dürften hingegen die Leistungsunterschiede zwischen dem 2015er M9 und der M9 Prime Camera Edition sein. Das neue Modell ist nicht länger mit einem Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, 3 Gigabyte RAM und 32 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher bestückt, sondern wartet mit dem Mittelklasse-Chipsatz MediaTek Helio X10, 2 Gigabyte RAM und 16 Gigabyte internem Speicher auf. Nichtsdestotrotz sollte die Performance für die allermeisten Anwender vollkommen ausreichen. Software-seitig läuft auf dem Smartphone läuft im Übrigen bereits ab Werk Android 6.0 Marshmallow inklusive HTCs eigener Sense-Oberfläche.
